Update: Critical incident - Palmerston

Police

Northern Territory police are continuing the investigation into the critical incident in Palmerston yesterday.

Members were responding to a report of a domestic violence incident when members were confronted by a man armed with a spear.

The man raised the spear at one of the officers despite repeated warnings.

The officer discharged his firearm, shooting the 19-year old male.

The other officer deployed their taser.

The male is in a critical condition in hospital.

“It is evident at that time the officers were in danger.” said Assistant Commissioner Michael White APM.

“Member welfare is paramount at the moment and we’re providing assistance to all members involved.”

“More broadly we’ve reached out to the family and do everything we can to engage with them so they can understand what the status of the investigation is.”

A large number of police resources have been allocated to the investigation to assist with door knocking in the area and forensic analysis.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged domestic violence incident also continue.

“At this time, we’re unable to say if the two incidents are linked”, said Assistant Commissioner Michael White APM.
