Fatal crash – Holtze

Police

Northern Territory Police are investigating a fatal crash in Holtze overnight.

At 7:30pm, police received a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on Thorngate Road. Immediately after the first collision, the woman was struck again by another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Drivers of both vehicles stopped at the scene as lawfully required and awaited police to attend.

Upon police and emergency services arrival, the woman was declared deceased at the scene. The road was closed with diversions while a crime scene was established. It has since been reopened.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said, “This was a particularly confronting scene to recover the deceased woman from underneath a large vehicle.

“Major Crash detectives have commenced an investigation to determine how and why this crash occurred. Both drivers involved returned negative results for roadside drug and alcohol testing.

“Forensic work is currently being undertaken to identify the deceased woman through fingerprints and DNA.

“Police are appealing for witnesses travelling along Thorngate Road in Yarrawonga prior to 7.30pm who can assist identify the movements of the pedestrian.  In particular, detectives seek to speak to the driver of a 4-wheel drive who was travelling on Thorngate Road towards Yarrawonga shortly prior to the crash. It is believed that this witness attempted to alert an oncoming vehicle of a road hazard by flashing high beam lights.
