A 39-year-old female pedestrian has died in Girraween overnight.
Police were notified shortly before 2:30am of the hit and run crash on Power Road. The driver continued driving and left the area without stopping to assist the injured woman.
Emergency services responded and an investigation commenced to locate the driver. Information provided by the public led police to a residence in Girraween where a vehicle was located and seized.
Police later attended an address in Humpty Doo where a 17-year-old male was arrested. He tested positive for alcohol.
Major Crash and Crime Division detectives are conducting the investigation and are appealing for any other witnesses with information to come forward to assist.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said: “This is another tragic loss of life on NT roads involving alcohol. It continues a pattern of motorists involved in pedestrian collisions choosing to continue driving rather than stopping to help as lawfully required.
“Power Road is expected to remain closed for the morning while Major Crash detectives record the crime scene.
“The alleged driver remains in custody.”
Investigations continue.
