Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook: September – November 2022

Fire and Rescue

The 2022 Top End fire season is well under way, fuels are fully cured and periods of severe fire weather are expected to occur.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said, “Both the NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT have conducted public awareness campaigns to help Territorians be prepared this fire season.

“In the Top End, weather conditions supporting higher than normal fire risk are expected through August and continuing into September but high humidity and early rainfall is forecast towards the end of this outlook period, reducing fire risk in those areas. Normal bushfire potential is expected for northern savannah areas, while noting the potential for localised areas of high fire risk, including urban and rural areas of greater Darwin. Central Australia is drying after significant rains over summer and the resulting onset of grass growth has increased fuel load and continuity.

“Bushfires can affect just about anywhere in the Territory. It’s important that you have a bushfire survival plan in place and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property. An unprepared property can put you, your family and your community at risk.

“Ensure you have firebreaks in place to defend your property and to provide access for firefighters.”

It’s up to all Territorians and visitors alike to monitor conditions, know what the Fire Danger Rating is each day and stay connected to local media, radio stations and websites for important information about bushfires.

“Act by keeping informed of Fire Danger Ratings and bushfire advice and warnings, be ready to implement your Bushfire Survival Plan,” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Fischer.

“Good information will always lead to good decisions. Staying safe requires knowing how to keep informed before and during emergencies.”
