Northern Territorians are being urged to prepare for wet weather and stay safe whilst travelling over the weekend and next week due to monsoonal weather system in the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a Tropical Cyclone Watch today, as north western coastal communities (may be affected by strong winds from as early as the evening of Christmas Day.

A tropical low over the Timor Sea north of Darwin intensified overnight, and will continue to track south towards the Northern Territory coastline today and tomorrow.

The tropical low may intensify to tropical cyclone strength while off-shore with the best guidance showing the system may cross the coast west of Darwin at a Category 1 system late on Sunday or Monday, named #CycloneSeth.

Whilst the system is not expected to pass directly over Darwin, severe wet and windy weather conditions are expected across the Darwin area this weekend, and additional warnings may be issued.

Senior Meteorologist Billy Lynch said that the system is being closely monitored by the Bureau and communities in the Top End should expect lots of wet weather and strong winds.

“We are expecting heavy rainfall of around 200mm over the next four days , which also increases the risk of flooding in the region.

“Tropical systems can intensify quickly, and shift direction, so it's a good time to remind Northern Territorians to check their emergency plan and cyclone kits before they go on their Christmas holiday break and to take extra care on the roads.”

Remember to know your weather, know your risk, and keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings using the BOM Weather app or the Bureau's website.

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services have stood up an Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the preparation for and response to this event.

Regional Controller Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole said, “People living and working in the areas under a watch are advised that now is the time to make sure your cyclone plans are finalised. Your emergency kits should be stocked and ready. You should determine now, where you and your family will take shelter if required to do so.

“Check on your neighbours, particularly any elderly or vulnerable people who may not be aware of the developing situation.

“Heavy rains and gales can be expected; please use all safety precautions and do not attempt to cross any flooded roads or crossings.”
