JACET arrests – Child abuse material

Police

NT Police arrested two men yesterday following search warrants in remote communities, for possession of child abuse material.

In the first case, detectives from the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) arrested a 41-year-old man on a remote island community, after the search of his person identified child abuse material stored on his mobile phone.

The man was charged with possessing child abuse material and remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court on 24 December.

In the second case, a 39-year-old man from East Arnhem Land was issued a Notice to Appear after search warrants executed on his person and his residence located several electronic devices storing child abuse material. He will face charges of:

  • s474.22 - Access child abuse material
  • s474.22A - Possess or control child abuse material

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said, “There is nothing benign about viewing or possessing images of children who are being exploited. The JACET team will remain relentless in pursuing and holding to account perpetrators of child exploitation.”
