Northern Territory Police are investigating a fatal crash in which a woman died outside a remote Top End community earlier today.

At 10:19am Maningrida Police responded to a report of a crash involving a sedan and a truck, 16 kilometres outside the remote community of Maningrida.

On arrival police found a male occupant of the sedan with serious injuries, and a female trapped inside the vehicle.

The man was transported to the nearby health clinic for treatment, and efforts were made to retrieve the woman who died at the scene.

The driver of the truck did not suffer any physical injuries in the incident.

Detectives from Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating the crash.

Motorists travelling in the area are advised road diversions are in place and are urged to proceed with caution in the area.
