Northern Territory Police have charged a man in relation to a vehicle fire in Darwin City yesterday morning.

At around 3:50am, police received reports of a vehicle fire at a carpark on Mitchell Street. NT Police and Fire Rescue Service attended the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished.

CCTV operators identified the alleged offender and he was arrested in the vicinity a short time later.

Strike Force Trident detectives have charged the 47-year-old with:

  • Arson
  • Threats to burn or destroy
  • Trespass

He was remanded to appear before Darwin Local Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said, “Quick action from our CCTV operators and a concerned member of the public have allowed our members to apprehend the alleged offender almost immediately.

“We are still requesting anyone in the area at the time of the fire, who witnessed any suspicious behaviour, to make contact on 131 444.”
