Assault officers – Carpentaria region

Northern Territory Police are meeting with stakeholders and community leaders in the Carpentaria region tomorrow after two officers were assaulted during an arrest over the weekend.

The officers were in the process of arresting a suspected drink driver when he allegedly assaulted them. A number of community members gathered and hindered the arrest, further assaulting the officers in the process.

A traditional owner attended and was able to negotiate with the alleged drink driver to be arrested and submit to a breath test.

A 41-year-old man has been charged with:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Breach DVO
  • 2 x Assault police (harm)
  • Drink driving (medium range)

He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

The two assaulted officers are receiving treatment for their injuries at the local clinic.

Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock said, “It's very disappointing when Police are attacked while working to protect our community from harm. I thank the traditional owner who offered her leadership in calming this incident.

“We are continuing investigations to identify the other people involved in the assaults and have made further arrests.”

A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault police
  • Hinder police
  • Engage in violent conduct

A 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with:

  • 2 x Assault police
  • 2 x Hinder police
  • Engage in violent conduct

A further two men have been given Notices To Appear for various disorder offences and several other adults are yet to be spoken to.

“We are also meeting with community and key stakeholders to raise key issues for discussion to improve understanding, and support of their local police.”
