Road safety - Reckless driving - Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police are concerned that some Territorians are not getting the message about dangerous driving habits.

Acting Superintendent Paul Faustmann said, “People are dying on our roads and still we see reckless behaviour from those who just don’t seem to think the law applies to them.”

A 30-year-old man was stopped for a random breath test and he returned a positive result. He was arrested for mid-range drink driving and taken Palmerston Watch house, were he was issued with a notice to appear.

Two provisional drivers were caught speeding on the Stuart Highway south of Darwin.

Darwin Traffic Operations, observed one vehicle travelling at 154km/hour and the other vehicle 148 km/hour in a 100km zone.

Both drivers, aged 18 and 19, were issued with infringement notices for excessive speed.

A 26-year-old learner driver has been issued with a notice to appear after he was caught travelling at 103km/hour in an 80km zone.

The man had no licenced driver in the front seat, he was not displaying L plates and was in the possession of cannabis.

“To reduce fatalities and serious injury on our roads requires drivers to share the responsibility and do the right thing,” A/Supt Faustmann said.

“This behaviour suggests that people are ignoring the advice and motivates Police to further increase efforts to deal with these drivers, who risk their lives and the lives of others”.
