Charges - Impaired Driving - Katherine

Northern Territory Police have arrested and charged five people after they were found to be drink or drug driving in Katherine yesterday.

Police apprehended a 33-year-old man at 10:25am, after he drove through a school zone with an unrestrained child on the back seat.

The man returned a positive reading at a roadside saliva test and was taken back to the Katherine Watch House, where he tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and cannabis.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Katherine Local Court today on the following charges:

  • Drive with prohibited drug in body; and
  • Drive with child unrestrained.

A 52-year-old man was arrested after he was detected speeding on the Stuart Highway at 2:25pm yesterday.

The man returned a positive reading at a roadside saliva test and was taken to the Katherine Watch House, where he tested positive for cannabis, methamphetamine, amphetamine and opiates.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Katherine Local Court today on the following charges:

  • Breach of bail;
  • Drive with prohibited drug in body;
  • Exceed speed <15km/hr over;
  • Drive unregistered motor vehicle; and
  • Drive uninsured motor vehicle.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged for driving under the influence of a prohibited drug, after he was stopped and tested on First Street at 7:40pm yesterday.

The man returned a positive result to cannabis and was bailed to appear before the  Katherine Local Court. He was charged with:

  • Driver with prohibited drug in body; and
  • Drive unlicensed.

Police have charged a 28-year-old woman who was found to be driving more than three times over the legal limit with three unrestrained passengers including a 5-month-old infant, in Katherine overnight.

Around 10:30pm, officers observed the vehicle driving on Dowling Street without its headlights on. The driver was subject to a breath test and returned a reading of 0.158 per cent and was subsequently arrested.

Police further observed two unrestrained adults and an unrestrained infant travelling in the vehicle.

The driver who was already disqualified from driving for a period of five years, was remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Local Court today, charged with;

  • Drive High Range Blood Alcohol Content;
  • Drive whilst Disqualified;
  • Drive Unregistered Motor Vehicle;
  • Drive Uninsured Motor Vehicle;
  • Drive with Child Unrestrained; and
  • Drive with Headlamps Alight.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with multiple drug driving related offences and will appear before the Katherine Local Court today.

At 11:55pm, police stopped the man on Bicentennial Road and conducted a road side drug test where he tested positive for cannabis and methamphetamine.

The man was charged with;

  • Drive with Prohibited Drug in Body
  • Possess Cannabis – Public Place
  • Possess Thing – Administer Dangerous Drug
  • Fail to Dispose of Syringe
