Charges - Drug Offence - Mataranka

Northern Territory Police have charged a 35-year-old male with drug offences following a vehicle search which occurred within an authorised Drug Detection Area on the Stuart Highway near Mataranka on 11 March 2020.

Police intercepted a green Toyota Hilux at around 2:10pm and conducted a vehicle search. Police detection dog Astra was deployed and responded to two large metal tool boxes in the rear tray of the vehicle.

Police conducted a search of the vehicle and located multiple packages of cannabis.

The male was arrested and conveyed to Katherine Police Station where the vehicle was searched further, locating another concealment of cannabis between metal tool boxes.

Police located and seized 32 kilograms of cannabis (street value of around $360,000) along with the vehicle.

The 35-year-old was charged with:

  • supply schedule 2 dangerous drug – commercial quantity
  • possess schedule 2 dangerous drug – commercial quantity

He was remanded to appear in Katherine Local Court today.
