Charges – Assault police and traffic offences – Palmerston

Police

Northern Territory Police have charged a 49-year-old man following a vehicle crash overnight.

At about 7:25pm last night, a vehicle crashed at the intersection of Ross Smith Avenue and Dick Ward Drive after allegedly travelling at speed. The vehicle struck an electrical distribution box which resulted in a power outage at nearby residences.

Police arrived and arrested the driver nearby. He was conveyed to Palmerston Regional Hospital for the purpose of providing blood for analysis and a medical assessment. While waiting, the man became aggressive towards staff and spat in the face of a police officer.

The 49-year-old man was deemed fit for custody and charged with:

  • assault a member of the police force
  • drive under influence of alcohol
  • fail to provide a sample of blood
  • disorderly behaviour in public place
  • damage to property
  • not stop or assist after crash
  • drive in a manner dangerous.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

The Officer in Charge of Darwin Police Station, Acting Senior Sergeant Joshua Cunningham said, “I was appalled to hear such a vile act took place last night. Assaults on police are never acceptable but to spit in the face of one of my members is absolutely disgusting and degrading.”
