Northern Territory Police have charged a 37-year-old man with multiple charges in relation to an incident in which two officers were assaulted in Mutitjulu last week.

Just after 11:30am on Friday, Yulara police were notified of a man causing a disturbance within the community store and smashing the windows of a vehicle parked outside the store.

Police located the man on a nearby street where it is alleged he threatened an officer. Officers were in the process of arresting the man when it is alleged he began to violently resist police and physically assaulted an officer.

Members subdued the man, at which time community members began to attack and attempt to overpower police. During the attack one officer received multiple cuts and bruising to his face and neck area and a broken finger. He was taken to the local clinic for treatment.

Sergeant Matthew Marshall of Yulara police said he was deeply disappointed by the actions of some community members on attending officers.

“It’s never acceptable to assault a member of the police,” said Sgt Marshall

“It is deplorable our officers are physically assaulted in their attempts to keep others safe. Our members already have a tough job and are entitled to go home to their loved ones without injury."

The man was charged with Assault police causing harm, two counts of Damage to property, Resist Police in the execution of duty and Armed with an offensive weapon. He has been remanded in custody to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court on 20 June 2019.
