Operation Hopkin

Police

The school holidays present a number of organisational challenges for the Northern Territory Police including increased patronage of public places and a higher prevalence of youth in public places, particularly in hours of darkness. There are potential increases in property crime due to houses being unoccupied while residents are away and a larger volume of vehicular traffic using the roads.

Northern Territory Police will be working collaboratively with other government and non-government organisations to ensure an effective and coordinated response in Darwin when they launch Operation Hopkin on Friday, 27 September.

The operation will focus on Darwin, Palmerston, Nightcliff and Casuarina areas throughout the two-week school holiday break.

Superintendent Craig Laidler said police will be conducting proactive patrols and providing a high visibility presence at a number of events during this time.

“The aim of the operation is to deter and detect property crime and anti-social behaviour. We will be working closely with our partner agencies to ensure the safety and security of Darwin residents.”

“While police will be increasing their presence, residents and business owners are reminded to be vigilant about securing their properties. The Neighbourhood Watch NT website is a great source for tips on how to keep your property safe following the Stop.Look.Lock. campaign.”

“We encourage members of the community to report any suspicious behaviour to police on 131444 or 000 in an emergency.”

Operation Hopkin will conclude on 14 October 2019.
