Motorists urged to buckle up

Northern Territory Police are urging motorists to buckle up following multiple incidents of vehicle occupants driving unrestrained.

In one instance, police conducted a traffic apprehension on a vehicle for the purpose of random breath testing in Darwin on Monday, 16 December. The driver returned a negative result for alcohol however he was found to be driving unlicensed. Additionally, five unrestrained children, aged from four-months to 12-years-old, were located in the backseat of the vehicle. The man was issued a notice to appear in court for the offences.

Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer said this behaviour is unacceptable.

“It is crucial that motorists ensure they undertake all necessary measures to keep safe on the roads, particularly when it comes to children. Seatbelts are there for a reason: they can save lives.”

“The Road Policing Unit will be increasing traffic patrols with the commencement of Operation Balfour tomorrow. Occurring throughout the festive period, Operation Balfour will see our officers targeting those not adhering to the basic road rules which are in place to keep us safe.”

“It doesn’t take a lot of effort to look after each other on the roads. Buckle up, don’t speed, don’t get distracted, don’t drink and drive, and don’t get behind the wheel if you are fatigued. More than anything, we want everyone to get home to their loved ones this festive period.”
