Alpurrurulam operation

Police

More than 100 litres of alcohol destined for the Alcohol Protected community of Alpurrurulam was seized and destroyed during a targeted Northern Territory and Queensland Police operation last week.

Focussed around the funeral of a senior member of the community, the four day operation aimed to keep alcohol out and afford family and community members a respectful service.

Avon Downs Remote Sergeant Aden Reeves said the operation was successful in preventing alcohol related violence within the community.

“This operation was done with the cooperation of community elders and members who wanted to grieve for their loved one and unite with family without the fear of alcohol related violence,” said Remote Sgt Reeves

“During the four day operation, we successfully seized a significant quantity of alcohol and three cars pursuant to the Northern Territory Liquor Act 1978.

“We want to make it abundantly clear to everyone that if you try to take alcohol into Alcohol Protected Areas within the Northern Territory, Police will seize your vehicle and you will have to front the judge and explain your actions.

“Through our connection with elders and other residents within the community we are working together to stop the flow of alcohol into Alpurrurulam and improving community outcomes there.”
