Tropical Cyclone Warning - Update #10

Police

As Cyclone Marcus heads southwest, NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services are urging people in the Greater Darwin region to stay home and out of danger.

While the cyclone has passed this region, there are still dangers present. Numerous powerlines have been brought down with some still live. Trees have fallen throughout the region and while the major arterials are accessible, some are not yet fully cleared.

Regional Controller Warren Jackson wants people to “stay inside, away from danger.”

“There has only been several hours since the cyclone passed,” he said.

“Many hazards are present and public safety is our priority.”

“Most people have followed our advice and as a result, we haven’t received any reports of major concern.”

“Don’t take unnecessary risks – only travel if it is absolutely required,” Regional Controller Jackson said.

“While assessments of damage are undertaken and the Emergency Services respond to over 400 jobs, it is safest for community members to stay home.”

With many houses currently without power and running water, the Department of Health has also issued advice regarding water. All residents throughout the Greater Darwin region should boil water and leave to cool before consuming or using for oral hygiene.

The latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology says a Warning is in place for Dundee Beach to Mitchell Plateau and a Watch for Mitchell Plateau to Cockatoo Island. The Cancelled zone is Cape Hotham to Dundee Beach including Darwin.

The public cyclone shelters throughout Greater Darwin have now been closed.
