A 37 year old would-be Willy Wonka was left with egg on his face following his arrest in Mataranka on Friday 23 February.

At approximately 9:30pm on Thursday night, two persons unlawfully entered a trailer of a road train and stole a carton of chocolate Easter eggs.

The eggs-hausted driver of the prime mover had parked in the public carpark opposite the Mataranka Hotel before retiring for the night in the sleeper compartment when the thieves struck.

A distinctive black t-shirt, with an image of Daffy Duck and the words “You’re Despicable” was left at the scene, enabling our eggs-cellent police to crack the case by quickly identifying the owner and make a sweet arrest.

The male was later remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Local Court on Monday 26 February. His co-offender has been identified, yet remains outstanding.
