Northern Territory Police have charged a 36-year-old male for allegedly assaulting two police officers in Alice Springs.
The incident occurred yesterday at about 11:30am when police responded to a call for assistance.
While police were attempting to arrest the male for a separate matter he allegedly resisted arrest, during which he seriously assaulted a male officer. A female officer also sustained minor injuries to her hands when she attempted to restrain the male.
The 36-year-old was eventually arrested with the aid of additional police officers and was charged with:
- assault a member of the police force
- resist police in the execution of duty
He is due to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.
In a separate incident – also in Alice Springs – a 62-year-old female was charged with assault a member of the police force after allegedly spitting on an officer, and will appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Lance Godwin said assaults against police are totally unacceptable.
“This type of violence and behaviour is unacceptable and should not be inflicted upon anyone in their workplace. Our frontline staff deliver a critical service to the community and we condemn any assault happening to our members in the course of their duties to serve and protect the community of the Northern Territory,” he said.
