Planning is underway for the possible development of Tropical Cyclone Frances in the Northern Territory.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that at 5:00am the intensifying tropical low was located in the Arafura Sea about 240km north northeast of Darwin.

The low is slowly travelling in a southwest direction and is expected form into a tropical cyclone north of the Tiwi Islands sometime this morning.

A cyclone WARNING is now in place from Croker Island to Cape Fourcroy, including the Tiwi Islands.

A cyclone WATCH is in place from Point Stuart to Mitchell Plateau, including Darwin.

Heavy rains associated with the weather system could lead to localised flooding and motorists are advised to use caution while driving.

“This serves as a reminder to drivers, ‘if it’s flooded, forget it’,” said Regional Controller Commander Tony Fuller.

“Do not attempt to enter or cross flooded roads and stay away from swollen waterways including pipes and drains. Visibility may be reduced so please remember to drive with your lights on.”

Cyclones and severe weather are a part of life in the Top End, and residents should have personal and business preparations for a cyclone event in place.
