Stay Out of Flood Waters

Police

Northern Territory Police are urging motorists to heed advice and stay out of flood waters after a third car was washed off a causeway in as many days.

Yarralin Police Acting Sergeant Chris Warfield said two men aged 54 and 19 were lucky to escape after their vehicle was washed off the Humbert River Crossing just outside Lingara about 8.45am yesterday.

“The vehicle was washed 150m downstream. The driver was forced to completely break off his door to get out,” he said.

“It’s important to factor in not just the water level but the current. The water was believed to have been about 1m deep but fast-moving.

“Drivers need to think: is it worth putting my life and the lives of my passengers at risk?”

Driver’s also face criminal charges should police determine the crossing to endanger passengers.

Police remain unable to reach the vehicle.
