Man Charged – Kava Seized

Police

Northern Territory Police have charged a 35-year-old Galiwinku man following a large seizure of kava.

Senior Constable Tania Smith from the Organised Crime Division said police seized the kava within airport freight back in October 2016.

“The kava, which was destined for Galiwinku had been separated into more than 1300 deal bags ready for sale. This haul had a potential profit of more than $130,000.

“Following a lengthy investigation, a 35-year-old man was summonsed to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 9 2017 for his alleged involvement.”

“This is a good seizure for NT Police – persons profiting from the distribution of kava in remote communities cause considerable social and health problems as well as serious economic hardship,” said Senior Constable Smith.

If you have any information regarding the sale of kava or any other dangerous drugs in the Territory please contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
