With the school holidays upon us and many Territorians planning trips away, NT Police are reminding the public to ensure their properties and valuables are secure before they go.
“Traditionally we see a spike in property crime during school holiday periods,” Acting Senior Sergeant Rick Magree said.
“Northern Territory Police will be out in force and taking active steps to minimise these incidents, however we need your help.”
The majority of property crime is opportunistic. By following these simple tips, you can reduce your risk of becoming the next victim:
- Secure your residence and tell a friend or relative that you will be away
- Ensure security lights are installed and working
- Store away any valuables to ensure they are out of sight, including car keys if you plan on leaving your car at home
- Consider registering your property with your local police station as an ‘Absentee Owner’.*
Remember, if you see something suspicious, report it to police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If traveling long distances on Territory roads, we urge motorists to plan ahead and avoid the fatal five - drink and drug driving, speeding, fatigue, distraction and not wearing a seatbelt.
We wish everyone a safe holiday break.
