Don Dale Escapees – Update

Police

Northern Territory Police have apprehended 17-year-old Don Dale escapee Trey Mawson.

He was taken into custody at Borroloola about 5am.

Meanwhile, detectives are investigating links between the other remaining escapee, Josiah Binsaris, and a pursuit on the Stuart Highway.

Superintendent Tony Deutrom said members in Katherine attempted a traffic apprehension on a Holden Colorado about 4.30am.

“The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was commenced. Shortly after, a blue Holden Commodore attempted to interfere with the pursuit by trying to run members off the road.

“The pursuit continued northbound and the Commodore dropped back. A short time later the Colorado stopped on the Stuart Highway before reversing in to members. Damage was minimal and the pursuit continued.

“The Commodore than overtook members and again attempted to run members off the road.

“About 16km south of Adelaide River, the Colorado has possibly clipped another vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and roll several times.”

The 19-year-old male driver is seriously injured and Careflight is en route.

The driver of the Commodore abandoned the vehicle at the scene and continued on foot. Police are searching the area.

Traffic controls are in place, the Stuart Highway remains open. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area and to report any suspicious behaviour or sightings of persons to police on 131444 or 000.
