Charges – MDMA – Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police have charged two men aged 18 and 19 with drug offences following a seizure of more than 500 MDMA pills.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer from the Organised Crime Division said Gangs Taskforce Detectives intercepted the pills at a mail distribution centre.

“The package allegedly contained 530 pills weighing 148 grams, with a conservative street value of $16,000.”

They have been charged with supply a commercial quantity of a schedule one drug, and remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stringer said it was important for the public to understand the dangers of consuming illicit substances.

“Tablets sold as MDMA often contain other drugs or substances and may not contain any MDMA.

“As a consequence, the effects and health risks associated with its use are unpredictable.

“Long-term effects of substance abuse may include irreversible impairment to cognitive functions. In high doses, MDMA can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature which can lead to hyperthermia, which can result in liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure and death.”
