Call for Information – Deprivation of Liberty – Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police are calling for witnesses following the deprivation of liberty and aggravated assault of a woman in Darwin overnight.

Detective Sergeant David Allan from the Serious Crime Squad said just before 3:00am police were notified by a member of the public about a serious assault occurring in the car park of the East Arm Boat ramp before the victim was forced into a nearby vehicle.

“Police attended and located the vehicle of interest, being a red 70 series Toyota LandCruiser. Upon seeing police, the driver sped off and a pursuit commenced through Berrimah and along the Stuart Highway towards Palmerston.

“Police pursued the vehicle down a dirt track across from the Robertson Barracks where a tyre deflation device was deployed by the Territory Response Group, having immediate effect on stopping the LandCruiser.

“The 39-year-old male driver has then surrendered himself to police. A 38-year-old female was located within the car suffering injuries consistent with an assault. She is currently in Royal Darwin Hospital where she is being assessed by medical staff.”

Police are calling for anyone who may have witnessed the assault at the East Arm boat ramp, or anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit by police moments after to come forward.

These people may have information that can assist our investigation and we ask them to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police can confirm the offender and victim are known to each other.

Charges are yet to be laid.
