Assault Police - Alice Springs and Darwin

Police

Two Northern Territory police officers were assaulted in separate incidents in Alice Springs and Darwin overnight.

A 26-year-old male was arrested following an altercation in Eastside, Alice Springs. The male allegedly assaulted an officer with a plastic bag containing several glass bottles. The officer suffered bruising and a laceration to the head.

A 32-year-old male was arrested in the Darwin CBD following a call for police assistance. When officers attended, the offender allegedly struck a police officer to the face causing minor injuries.

Commissioner of Police, Reece Kershaw said any assault on police, or anyone, is completely unacceptable.

“Violence should not be inflicted upon anyone in their workplace, least of all those who are there to protect and keep Territorians safe,” Mr Kershaw said.

“NT Police will ensure these serious crimes are investigated and prosecuted as appropriate.

“Policing is a challenging and sometimes dangerous profession and we are extremely proud of our officers who put themselves in between violence and the general public in the name of safety every day.”

The alleged offenders were both charged with assaulting police and disorderly behaviour and will appear in the Darwin and Alice Springs local courts respectively this afternoon.
