The Northern Territory road toll has climbed to 32 following two separate fatal crashes overnight.

Acting Superintendent Janelle Tonkin said the first crash occurred around 7:00pm on the Stuart Highway, 60km west of the Timber Creek township.

“A mini van carrying four female occupants has left the roadway causing it to roll into scrubland. A 62-year-old female died at the scene, the three other occupants were transported to Timber Creek Clinic for treatment to various injuries.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.”

The second incident occurred just before 11pm, on the Cox Peninsula Road, Berry Springs.

“A vehicle carrying three male occupants has collided with the rear end of a road train that was attempting to conduct a right hand turn,” said Acting Superintendent Tonkin.

“Two male occupants aged 25 and 31 died at the scene, the 28-year-old driver was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the crash. He is currently in a stable condition.

“Police believe alcohol played a factor in the crash and the driver is expected to be charged later today.”

The Territory road toll this time last year was 37.
