Package Fire - Winnellie

Police

A parcel in a postal delivery warehouse that smouldered and caught fire early this morning has prompted a warning from the NT Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire Investigator, Senior Station Officer Tony Miles, said quick reactions from staff at the distribution centre prevented a major incident.

“It appears a drone has been transported ready for assembly but the lithium battery was not connected to anything. It has deteriorated and self-ignited.

“Staff have managed to isolate the package and no further damage was done.”

SSO Miles said it was a timely reminder that Lithium batteries are capable of spontaneous ignition.

“If you are planning to transport these batteries please follow all directions and recommendations of the product closely.

“If you have a lithium battery that has been dropped or damaged you should contact the manufacture or supplier for further instruction.

“It was only timing, luck and prompt reaction from staff at the centre that prevented this incident being much more serious,” he said.
