National Police Remembrance Day

Police

Tomorrow, Police across Australia, New Zealand and the South-West Pacific will pause to honour their fallen colleagues.

National Police Remembrance Day will be marked with memorial marches in Darwin and Alice Springs, and remembrance services in each of the major centres. The Territory community is invited to attend the marches and services and show support for police across the country.

“It is our most poignant day of the year,” Northern Territory Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said.

“We stop to remember our colleagues and officers of the past who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their community, and died whilst serving and protecting others.”

Each jurisdiction honours its fallen members, and the National Police Memorial in Canberra maintains a national register.

There, a wall bears the names of 757 police officers who have lost their lives in the execution of their duty across Australia since 1803.

This year, seven more names are being added to that memorial, including our own Senior Constable Michael Read.

Police Remembrance Day Ribbons are available from major police stations for a gold coin donation. All proceeds go to Police Legacy.
