Northern Territory Police have charged three people following a seizure of kava in Nhulunbuy yesterday.

Superintendent Warren Jackson said Police were screening passengers and baggage at Nhulunbuy Airport as part of an ongoing operation to combat drugs in remote communities.

“As a result of the search, Police located a combined total of 57 kilograms of kava in three separate suitcases,” Superintendent Jackson said.

“Police will allege the kava was for distribution throughout the community, where it could fetch up to $114,000.”

A 59-year-old female was charged with possession of a traffickable quantity of kava.

Two males aged 27 and 29 were charged with possession of a commercial quantity of kava.

All three will appear in Darwin Local Court on 15 August 2016.
