Police are currently investigating matters where a number of Northern Territory businesses have been targeted by well-researched fraud attacks. Some of these attacks have netted significant sums of money.

The attacks are based on causing the targeted business to pay invoices that are either fake or have had the payment details altered to misdirect the payment to accounts accessible by the offenders or their associates.

In some instances the offenders have utilised the business’s own internal email system to generate fake payment authorisations.

Businesses and finance/payment areas specifically are advised to ensure that processes around payments are robust and where possible include a step to validate the payment and the recipient details.

Funds obtained by these scams have been observed to be rapidly moved offshore complicating any possibility of recovery.
