The Northern Territory road toll has risen to 38 following the death of a woman on the Stuart Hwy this evening.

A passing motorist came across the crash scene, about 50km south of the Stuart Wells Road House about 6.15pm.

Southern Traffic Members from Alice Springs responded. A second occupant has suffered minor head injuries.

The road toll was 42 at the same time last year.
