Easter Long Weekend Wrap-Up

Police

Over the Easter long weekend, Northern Territory Police had a heightened presence on our roads and waterways to ensure safety was on the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Senior Sergeant Serge Bouma from Darwin Traffic Operations Division said 8138 drivers were breath tested over course of the Easter long weekend.

“Overall, Police were pleased with the behaviour displayed by most motorists,” he said.

“Unfortunately, there were still far too many people who chose to disobey the law and put their lives and the lives of others at risk, with a total of 24 individuals charged with drink driving.

“Police urge all Territorians to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others and remind them that the consequences of irresponsible driving behaviour can be, and far too often are, fatal.”

Territory Water Police conducted high visibility patrols of Roper River, Ngukurr, Timber Creek and Dundee as well as Darwin Harbour as part of Operation Javico.

The standard of compliance with Marine and Fisheries laws was very high with only a few incidents being reported.

Police checked 434 vessels, issued seven infringements and 25 cautions.
