Drug Driving Random Testing Commencement

Police

Drugs and driving do not mix, and from today Northern Territory Police have new powers to conduct random drug testing on all road users.

Superintendent Bob Rennie from the Traffic Operation Division said the recent amendments to the Traffic Act means NT Police can now drug test any driver, on any road, at any time.

“These new changes are welcomed by NT Police and now bring us in line with our interstate counterparts.

“Drivers will now be required to provide saliva samples which will test for illicit substances such as cannabis, MDMA, and methamphetamine.

“Positive tests or failure to submit a saliva test can result in immediate suspension of your licence, fines and/or imprisonment,” Superintendent Rennie said.
