A 19-year-old man has been charged with the alleged theft of a large sum of money from a Palmerston sports club.

The man allegedly broke into the club on University Ave between January 7-9.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer from Strike Force Trident said after gaining entry, the man and another unknown accomplice stole a sum of money.

“The man and his accomplice stole about $10,000 in cash and coin which was were the proceeds of a private function which had occurred earlier in the evening on January 7,” he said.

“To date, the safe and cash have not been recovered.”

The man was arrested on Wednesday when Police spotted him driving a car on Emery Avenue in Gray.

He was also in possession of allegedly stolen property.

He has been charged with:

  • Damage to property
  • Aggravated unlawful entry
  • Stealing
  • Possess stolen property
  • Drive unlicensed.

He will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today.
