Northern Territory Police have charged a 25-year-old Daly Waters woman in relation to a string of online scams involving the sale of iPhones.

Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank from the High Tech Crime Squad said the woman was contacting victims via SMS offering to sell phones.

“If the victims agreed to the purchase, they would pay the offender but the goods would never be dispatched,” he said.

Police have identified victims in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, but believe there are many more who have not reported the crime.

She was charged with three counts of criminal deception and has been bailed to appear in the Mataranka Court on 4 May 2016.

Sergeant Windebank urged online shoppers to use caution when transferring money to people they don’t know personally.

“If an online sale sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he said.

“While people may not consider it worthwhile reporting a matter where they have lost relatively small amounts, when offenders use modern technology to commit offences they can target a large number of victims and the cumulative losses can be quite significant.

“It is important that these matters are reported to Police so they can be properly investigated and steps taken to stop the offending.”
