Call for Information Flare Sighting Galiwinku

Police

Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to the sighting of four red flares north of Howard Island to the west of Galiwinku on Monday night.

Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said the description of the flare sighting was consistent with marine distress parachute flares. A yellow flash – which could be attributed to atmospherics – was also seen in the same direction about 40 minutes later.

“Enquiries in neighbouring areas have not found any parties to be overdue, and vessels and aircraft in the area have searched without success.

“There was also no beacon activation or mayday call.

“There was severe weather in the area, so it is also possible a vessel set-off the flares, before being able to recover in the mild conditions after the storm.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police on 131 444
