A 17-year-old male has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and three other youths recommended for juvenile diversion following the theft of a taxi mini-bus this morning.

Detective Sergeant Mark Bland from Strike Force Trident said Police will allege five youths were involved in the theft of the taxi from an address in Rosebery at 5:00am.

“We have evidence to suggest they drove around the city, Casuarina and Palmerston before abandoning the vehicle in Mandorah.

“Five juveniles, aged 17, 13, 13, 12 and eight, were taken into custody early this morning.  The eight-year-old was returned to his home.

“Evidence retrieved from the taxi was linked to an earlier reported unlawful entry in Driver where a wallet and mobile phone were taken.

“A vehicle at the residence was also interfered with, however the car was crashed into a neighbour’s vehicle and abandoned.”

Detective Bland said it was a great concern to Police that these young people are risking their lives, the lives of their passengers and the lives of other road users by stealing vehicles.

“To have children in control of vehicles is a tragedy waiting to happen.  They do not have the skills or understanding of road laws, often drive at excessive speeds and with no concern for other road users.

“The 17-year-old was also charged with aggravated unlawful entry, stealing, damage to property and drive unlicensed.”
