Youth Charged - Traffic and Property Offences - Darwin

Police

Strike Force Trident Detectives have charged a 14-year-old male with a number of traffic and property offences.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said General Duties Police witnesses a silver Mazda driving without its headlights in Karama just before midnight, 6 October.

“Police attempted to apprehend the vehicle and it is alleged the driver sped away. Police followed the vehicle for a short amount of time but terminated the pursuit due to high speeds.

“The Mazda was witnessed driving erratically around the northern suburbs and narrowly missed two ambulances on Vanderlin Drive before the driver lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road.

“The 14-year-old male driver fled in to nearby bushland but was located a short time later by members of the Dog Operation Unit and was arrested.

“Further investigations revealed the vehicle was stolen from a residence in Wanguri earlier that day.”

The youth was charged with:

  • Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • Drive a vehicle in a dangerous manner during a pursuit
  • Not stop after a crash
  • Unlawfully possess property
  • Drive unlicensed

He will appear in Darwin Youth Justice Court on Friday 16 October.
