Northern Territory Police have arrested and charged two youths, aged 13 and 16, following the theft of a motor vehicle in Darwin’s northern suburbs.

Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer from Strike Force Trident said the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the youths attended a residence in Lyons. 

“It is believed the pair smashed the window to a vehicle and stole a handbag and keys,” Senior Sergeant Stringer said. 

“It is alleged that they then used the keys to steal a Mitusubishi Lancer, also at the residence. 

 “Upon leaving, they drove the Lancer into the other vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles.  

“It is alleged that the youths drove the vehicle out to Coolalinga, before driving it into a ditch, causing further damage to the vehicle. The car was then abandoned at the scene.

“Later that morning, Police located the two youths in Moulden.  After a short foot pursuit, the youths were arrested.”  

The 13-year-old was charged with:

• Damage to property
• Stealing
• Aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle
• Breach of bail

The 16-year-old was charged with:

• Damage to property (x2)
• Stealing
• Aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle
• Drive unlicensed

They were both remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Youth Justice Court on 7 April 2015.
