Suspicious Vehicle - Nhulunbuy

Police

Police are investigating two separate reports of a vehicle approaching children in Nhulunbuy yesterday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant John Worrall said it is alleged a man driving a white Hilux utility approached a child near Lions Park at around 4:00pm.

“It is alleged the man offered the child a ride in his vehicle, the child declined the offer and walked away before the vehicle drove off. The incident was later reported to Police.

“Police have also received a report of a similar incident in Nhulunbuy that occurred about an hour later which would appear to involve the same utility.

“The vehicle is described as having a rusty tray, tinted windows and has the numberplate displayed in the back window.  Despite extensive patrols police have yet to locate the vehicle or identify driver.

“Police urge anyone who knows the owner or whereabouts of this vehicle, sights this vehicle or has any information in relation to this to contact the Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

In this instance the child did exactly the right thing by walking away and reporting it to Police. Parents are encouraged to speak with their children and remind them of the four ‘R’s:

  • Recognise the danger
  • Refuse any offer
  • Run away
  • Report it to the first adult they trust.
