Suspicious Fire - Katherine East

Katherine Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a high school on Grevillea Road last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Richardson said Police and Fire and Rescue Crews received a report a building at the rear of the school was on fire at around 6:30pm.

“It appears the fire started in a storage area at the rear of the building, which then spread to the rest of the main building. A shade cloth was also set alight.

“Fire crews extinguished the flames at around 9:00pm with the building sustaining extensive damage. Police estimate the damage bill to be well in excess of $100,000. Fortunately no one was injured.

“A crime scene has been established and detectives from the Northern Investigation Section are investigating.

“We have reports of a large group of youths in the area prior to the fire at the high school.

“Police urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area between 5:30 and 6:30pm or anyone with further information to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
