Stealing Charges - Katherine

Police

Quick thinking by members of the public to alert nearby Police of a purse snatcher has resulted in the arrest of a 14-year-old male.

Superintendent Megan Rowe said a 44-year-old woman was withdrawing cash from an Automatic Teller Machine when the youth took her purse and ran off.

“A family member with the woman gave chase and was able to alert patrolling Police of the incident.

“Two Officers who were manning a Temporary Beat Location joined the chase and the alleged offender was caught nearby.”

Superintendent Rowe said the male was still in possession of the purse and cash when apprehended.

“This would have been a very distressing incident for the woman and her family.  We thank the family member who was able to quickly alert Police and congratulate the Officers on a very quick response and resolution.

“Unfortunately, opportunistic crimes of this nature do occur and anyone using an ATM should take this as a warning to be aware of your surroundings and be alert to this possibility.  Thankfully, on this occasion no one was hurt and the woman had her possessions returned to her.”

The youth was charged with stealing and possession of cannabis after a search allegedly uncovered a small amount of the drug in his underpants.

He was bailed to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court on 24 July.
