Speed Camera Unit De-identification

Police

As of tomorrow, spotting a speed camera van in the Territory is about to become very difficult. All Northern Territory Police mobile speed camera vehicles will have Police markings removed and all speed camera activity will now be undertaken covertly.

Acting Commander Bob Rennie from the Traffic and Operational Support Command said Police hope the move will slow down all drivers on all roads all of the time.

“This strategy brings the Northern Territory in line with other jurisdictions around Australia,” A/Commander Rennie said.

“The message to all drivers is that they can expect that mobile speed cameras will be operating on any road, at any time and in any vehicle.

Acting Commander Rennie said Police wanted to remind drivers illegal speeds can and will be detected anywhere. During the trial, speed camera locations will not be publically released.

“The ultimate aim is to reduce the incidence of speeding and road trauma in the Northern Territory.”  The current road toll stands at 41, compared to 36 at the same time last year.

“Police are committed to doing everything we possibly can to curb this preventable and tragic loss of life.”
