NT Police continue to call for public assistance to locate Brett Mahoney, believed to be in the Darwin rural area.

“It is believed the Mr Mahoney may have up to seven children with him. These children are related to him, and are aged between eight months and 11 years,” Assistant Commissioner Jeanette Kerr said.

Mr Mahoney was involved with three others in a confrontation with associates at a residence in Dundee late Saturday evening.  It was alleged that two firearms were produced during this incident.  At this time there was no risk to the public.

Police have been actively negotiating the surrender of the alleged co-offenders over Monday and yesterday. 

Mr Mahoney failed to surrender to police and went mobile in his red Landcruiser yesterday evening with up to seven children with him. 

The involvement of the children has only been confirmed this morning.

“The safety of the children is our number one priority,” Assistant Commissioner Kerr said.

“NT Police are deploying significant resources to locate the children and safely apprehend Mr Mahoney.

“Our intention is to resolve the situation peacefully and without any risk to the children, Mr Mahoney, responding Police or the public.”

The public is advised not to approach Mr Mahoney if sighted. He may be armed and is potentially a risk if approached.

“Police ask Mr Mahoney if he is listening to please contact them on 131 444 and discuss where he can surrender.”

Assistant Commissioner Kerr particular thanks the public for their positive comments information and support throughout the operation and thanks the media for their responsible reporting and cooperation to safely locate the children and Mr Mahoney.

Police will be conducting enquiries and patrols in the Darwin rural area throughout the duration of this operation.
