Northern Territory Police are continuing to work with the elders at Anugurugu and Umbakumba as the Groote Eylandt communities return to normal following last week’s disturbances in which two men were killed.

Yesterday six men aged between 19 and 55 were charged with a variety of serious offences and will appear in court this morning.

The 55-year-old male has been charged with the murder of the 29-year-old male killed during last Friday’s disturbance.

A 15-year-old male was arrested and charged in Alyangula yesterday for recklessly endanger serious harm / go armed in public / violent disturbance / armed with offensive weapon. He has been granted bail.

The three males arrested yesterday will be interviewed this morning.

“Today we are focusing on continued arrest targets in relation to the spear throwing, and we will be continuing to conduct reassurance patrols in both Anugurugu and Umbakumba.”

“Police thank the community elders and the wider community for their continued assistance with our investigations and we hope to continue to negotiate peaceful surrenders of the people involved,” Commander Fuller said.
