Offenders Arrested - Social Disturbance - Groote Eylandt

NT Police have arrested 12 people, including one female in relation to a variety of weapon and assault related charges, following a disturbance in the Angurugu community earlier today.

Local Police were assisted by the deployment of response units from Darwin, including four Tactical Response Group members and a General Purpose Dog and Handler.

Two males were taken to Angurugu Clinic as a result of injuries sustained in the disturbance with one requiring additional treatment and subsequently being transferred to Darwin.

Minor panel damage was caused to a Police vehicle as part of the disturbance, however the situation has calmed with a number of involved persons being identified and since been placed into custody.

A/Superintendent Steve Heyworth confirmed “Local Police in the community have been working closely with the local Elders, and thank them for their assistance in managing this community unrest”.

NT Police will retain an increased presence overnight, and continue to monitor and respond to any community unrest. It is expected that ongoing investigations will result in additional offenders and charges being identified.
