New Year’s Wrap Up - Darwin

Police

Police in Darwin had a busy night on New Year’s Eve keeping revellers safe during the festivities.

Acting Commander Scott Pollock of the Darwin Metropolitan Command said Police from various units came together to ensure those out celebrating acted responsibly while bringing in the New Year.

“Police from the Mounted Unit, Dog Operations Unit, Metropolitan Patrol Group and Darwin Traffic Operations, as well as members from Water Police took a total of 64 people into protective custody throughout the evening and morning.

“Police arrested 36 people for numerous offences including four assaults, two for drink driving and two for breach of an Alcohol Protection Order.

“One of those arrested was a 25-year-old man who became aggressive after being asked to leave a licensed premises on Smith Street at around 12:15am. It is alleged the man kicked a security guard as the security personnel attempted to restrain him prior to Police arrival.

“A 19-year-old female was arrested at 5:15am after she allegedly became enraged when realising a nearby taxi was occupied. It is alleged the woman snapped off a windscreen wiper and struck the windscreen, causing it to smash.

“The woman assaulted Police as she was being placed in the back of the Police vehicle. She was charged with criminal damage, resist Police and assault Police.

“Both of these alleged offenders were bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on 5 February.

“Although Police were kept busy, a majority of the party-goers were well behaved and acted responsibly.”
